I ran into the same exact problem recently. Had to do the same thing to fix it.

Just ran:
perl -pi -e “s/-I\/usr\/local\/ssl\/include\/openssl/-I\/usr\/local\/ssl\/include/g” Makefile

And everything was great from there on.
